Bernina Pass
The Bernina Pass narrow gauge railroad line is located in the Southeastern part of Switzerland. It links the State of Grisons with the town of Tirano, situated in the Valtellina valley in Northern Italy, right on the border with Switzerland. Construction of the 60.5 km long line was completed in 1908 by the privately owned Bernina Bahn ("Bernina Railroad"). The route - initially open only during the summer months, but turned into a year-round venture from the winter of 1910/11 onwards - starts in the well known Alpine spa of St. Moritz at an altitude of 1770m asl. On the first 20 km of the route, it climbs to the summit of Bernina Pass, located at an altitude of 2284m asl. From Bernina Summit, the line drops sharply to the floor of the Poschiavo valley at 1011m asl.As the crow flies, the distance between the summit and Poschiavo is just under 10 km, yet the track takes three times this distance to wind its way down, using a constant 7% grade for the descent. A few short stretches of even terrain where passing sidings have been built offer the only relief to the hard-working motors during that part of their journey. Once past Poschiavo, the train continues its descent to the Italian border, which it reaches two miles short of the town of Tirano, levelling out at an altitude of 450m asl. Since the opening days, the scenic three-hour-trip from St. Moritz to Tirano literally takes many a passengers' breath away, linking the harsh climate of eternal glacial ice with a valley filled with lush green vines and mediterranean vegetation.
